Buying a Caravan?

Sponsored by Tygerberg Caravans

With so many caravans with different shapes and sizes, it makes choosing which caravan to buy sometimes very difficult.  This is especially so with all the features of each an every make of caravan that is adds to the bundle of choices that has to be made to choose the correct caravan for each family's individual needs.  With potential newcomers the the caravan world, this becomes even more confusing talking to caravaners because every caravaner has it own idea of what a newcomer should be looking for.  In talking to caravaners that has been in the caravanning for so long, will always good ideas.  We trust that some of the points below will be of assistance.

How do I choose and which one?

Sometimes it’s easier to use a process of elimination and to choose from the remainder.  Main considerations include:

FAMILY SIZE

How many people need to sleep inside?  Are your kids young therefore you need a comfy 4-berth?  Or are they old enough to sleep in the multi-room meaning you can consider a smaller van and extend with tents.

TOW VEHICLE

Refer to our FAQ page explaining weights.  The larger the car, the larger the van allowed.

BATHROOM

Does anybody in the household need an on-site loo?  Middle-of-the-night-in-winter stories?  Babies that need hot water on-site?  Don’t like showering at ablutions?  You can either go for the built-in bathroom with private cubicles or opt for the porta-potti which can be stored out of sight when not in use.

BUDGET

This will assist you in determining whether a brand new or good used van will be suitable for you now.  Cash versus financing can be considered.  Maybe upgrade a cash used to financed new.

REMEMBER THAT BUYING CHEAPER DOES NOT LOWER YOUR ‘LOSS ON RESALE’ RISK.  A GOOD CARAVAN RETAINS ITS VALUE AND EQUALISES OVER AN APPROXIMATED 5-YEAR PERIOD.  YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO LOOSE MONEY ON A CHEAPIE THAT NEEDS WORK THAN ON A GOOD-QUALITY USED MODEL WHICH WILL BE RELATIVELY EASY TO RESELL!

Frequently asked Questions

FINANCING

Yes, you can finance a caravan easily!!  Very similar to that of a vehicle.  We are registered with all the main finance houses & we do all the hard work for you!!

NEW CARAVANS

New caravans varies from client to client but on average one can aim for Prime interest over 60 months without deposit.  Per R50000 being financed, one can budget about R1100/month – use this to make approximated calculations.

USED CARAVANS

Used caravans varies from client to client but one would need a deposit (10-30%); your interest rate would increase and your period decrease – all according to client & year model and value of van in question.

TOWING A VAN

The tare weight of the vehicle must exceed the GVM of the caravan. The bigger the difference, the better the tow

Explain please!!!

The TARE is the empty weight (unloaded weight).  The GVM (gross vehicle mass) is the fully loaded weight.  The difference is what you can load.  You will find the caravan weights on the chassis plate mounted somewhere on the A-Frame near the nose.  The car weights can be found on your license disc.
